Spring is here and summer is sure to follow; thoughts turn to the
outdoors and plants. HSC has a variety of gardening and plant books
specific to the North country. Here are a couple of books that will help
you incorporate northwoods plants into your home garden setting.
Flowers for Northern Gardeners by Leon Snyder
Trees, Shrubs and Vines; a Pictorial Guide to theOrnamental Woody
Plants of the Northern United States by Arthur T. Viertel.
If you’d like to wander through the wild landscape, be sure to bring the
book, Graced by the Seasons; Spring and Summer in the Northwoods
by John Bates.
These are only a few of the many titles available in our store.
HSC is featuring 3 new science-oriented story books.
Clan Apis by Jay Hosler tells about life in a bee hive as seen
through the eyes of the worker bee Nyuki. The story begins with her
birth and follows her life through the larval and pupa stages and on
into adulthood where it follows her exploits as she finds her way around
in the outside world as a worker bee.
Also by Jay Hosler is The Sandwalk Adventures – an Adventure in
Evolution. This novel features an older Charles Darwin as he lives
with his family. It seems that one of the follicle mites living in
Charles’ left eyebrow can talk. Darwin assumes the task of explaining to
the mite how forces of natural selection set the stage for its
existence.
The third book we are featuring is Two-Fisted Science by Jim
Ottaviani, Mark Badger, Donna Barr, and Sean Bieri. This book introduces
some of the most famous figures in physics––not just what they are known
for, but what kind of people they were. The stories are based on life
experiences that helped shape the world views of these scientists
