Talented and Gifted Program (TAG)
. . . . Taking Science Education to the Next Level

Thanks to a generous grant from the Neilson Foundation, Headwaters Science Center offers special science education opportunities for students from Bemidji Middle School (ages 11 to 15). The TAG program is designed for students showing a special interest or talent in the sciences. Any student is eligible, but they must be recommended by a teacher.

Students in the TAG program will meet at the Science Center every six weeks for three consecutive sessions.  Curricula designers and instructors include experts in the fields of physics, chemistry and engineering. Emphasis is on lab-based learning with a very hands-on approach to discovery. The first topic for our TAG program was Chemistry, where students explored unique properties of water, acids and bases, physical and chemical reactions, environmental chemistry, chemo luminescence, density and molecular modeling. Check the HSC Calendar for future sessions and topics.

In February and April the focus will shift to Physics and Engineering, where again our explorations will be lab-based with firsthand experience through scientific experimentation. Our focus areas next are nanotechnology (science and technology of the very very small), sound, light and the physics of underwater diving.

So far the program has been quite successful, generating considerable interest and enthusiasm from students, teachers, and the community.

There are no fees for participants.
